The three golden rules
- 1You paid the expense yourself and were not reimbursed by your employer.
- 2The expense directly relates to earning your income — not a future income-earning activity, and not a private expense.
- 3You have a record to substantiate the claim.
Written evidence and the $300 threshold: If total work-related claims are $300 or less, a record of how the amount was worked out is needed but receipts are not required. Above $300, written evidence is required for the whole claim, not just the portion over $300. Within that threshold, clothing and laundry claims without written evidence are capped at $150.
Retention: Records are generally kept for 5 years from the date of lodgment of the relevant tax return.
